Capitolas Do It Again

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

The Capitolas timing was great for good fishing. We were able to find a great dolphin pod and have some fun. We found a few scattered dolphins which led us to the big pod. It was a beautiful pod charging to the north. There were 50 birds flying off the head of the well organized pod. The frigate birds flew above diving when the flying fish got chased into the air by the feeding dolphins. It looked like a perfect situation for a trolling strike for a possible double or triple strike. As we made our second pass I saw a big tuna jump into the air feeding. We gave it 5 passes thinking we would be bit trolling and nothing came. We changed to the tuna stick and caught 4 nice tuna before we had to head home. Matt got a great clip of video of a big  fish jumping into the air to get the jumping squids.

Close Call

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Today the Capitolas shared a close call with us today. We decided to go south to Milolii and trolled down they inside run. We had a giant hole on the stinger and what I thought might be a Ahi turned into a nice Marlin. After two thirds of the spool got out on us we started to gain line. The fish did a bunch of weird moves under the water and we thought we lost the fish 3 times. As the fish neared the boat things looked good. The fish was settling down and we were looking like we were going to get a shot at the fish and we pulled the hook. We got set back out and headed south. We ended up at the far buoy TT and although it looked great we headed back north to check B buoy. As we trolled up to the buoy we raised a small fish and missed it right away. We trolled up to the buoy after the strike and I marked a few big tuna on the screen. I was thinking about changing over to live bait when the long rigger took off and a fish close to 300 jumped. What a way to change over. Let’s catch this fish and put some baits out. We snuck up on the fish turn and chasing. It neared the boat in minutes and the leader came up. We reversed up to the fish and Matt got the leader. The fish jumped on the leader and stood straight up in the air. Matt went to let got and the fish tipped over on his back. I yelled”Look Out!” and in a second Matt ducked under the rod and the fish jumped across the corner of the boat and landed on the covering board. The head and bill of the Marlin was over the side. It laid there for a second and kicked Matt in the back as it slid into the water. No one got hurt. We stood there in shock for a second before we continued to fight the fish. We tagged it safely and really feel happy everyone was safe.

Tailing Swordfish

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Today Matt and I took his girlfriend Laura out for the day. We jumped off a fish over 500 and continued to work the area. On a tack in from the outside our friends hooked a small fish and we went to watch and take pictures. As we approached they started yelling there was another fish there about 400 following the fish they had on. They released the small fish and we circled around there trying to get the partner to bite. As we gave up on that fish I looked inshore and saw a small swordfish on the surface. We baited it with a live bait and had it actually look at the bait. After a number of attempts we borrowed a harpoon and tried to harpoon the fish. It turned out that we lost site of the small one and had one 250 show up in our sites. We lost it a couple times and had friends on the Bad Company find one time. We got close to it but with no bow rail or plank we didn’t get a chance. It is very rare to see the swords on the surface like that. It was a beautiful fish and as we approached the fish it would light up and squirt away just out of range.

Mate Appreciation Day

Friday, July 10th, 2009

I woke up early and decided to go fishing. I had not gotten in touch with anyone the night before and decided at the last minute I would go and fish alone like I used to all the time. I ran out to the dolphin pod and trolled them until they came together. There weren’t many marks on my sounder but when they came together I put out the tuna stick and hooked a tuna right away. 2 other boats hooked up at that time the bite was on. I fought the fish to the boat in about 5 minutes and it came to leader. I got the leader like we always do and the tuna circled below. I took my final wraps on the leader and reached over the side with my gaff and right when I was going to gaff it the hook came out. Just like that my first chance was gone. I fished the pod all day and watched as other boats caught a few more fish. at 4:00 that lost fish started to sting. I thought to myself I guess I could high speed home and try to catch a marlin. I pulled in my rig and threw the lures out and got the Northern Lights up to 13 knots. I had 2 small marlin on all the way to the boat and before I could tag them they jumped off. Had one of my boys been there We would have tagged them both. Guys- heres to you and all you do for that  advantage of team work you give me to catch all of those almost catches. Great day of fishing, fun and a little more challenging.

Trijicon “Game Chasers”

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Scott the host of Trijicon’s “Game Chasers” filmed a few shows here in Kona mostly hunting with Pat Fisher of Fisher Outfittiers. They filmed segments of hunting the Black Hawaii sheep, The spanish goats and flew to Molokai to hunt Axis Deer. They had great hunting and got the footage for their shows. They had an extra day so we offered to try to add to their show and try to catch a marlin on film. The fish were camera shy except for one big ono that we caught on our short big marlin lure. A good surprise but not really what we were looking for. Scott is a class act. Look for the show on Trijicon’s “Game Chasers” on the Outdoor channel. img_3184_1

Good Bye Uncle Phil

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Kona fishing icon Phil Parker passed away this week. Phil was the voice of many of the Kona tournaments. He is known as KC longnose and his unique voice will forever be remembered as he kept score of the round ups and encouraged teams on . A  service and burial at sea to follow really was touching as most of the fleet was there to bid their goodbye to one of the great fishing personalities of our Kona fleet. Good bye Uncle Phil.img_3194_1

Hunting for Marlin and Spears

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Jesse Sanchez and his family came to hunt with Pat Fisher of Fisher Outfitters. He was from Montana and here on vacation to enjoy Hawaii and hunt and fish. They found lots of spanish goats to choose from and ended up getting to nice sized billys. Jesse hunts and fishes Montana for trout and for big mule deer and elk. His personal best elk scores over 400. We were able to show him what Hawaii hunting and fishing was all about in our combination package. The bait arrived today and tons of big aku(oceanic skipjack) showed up behind them. The big marlin should be here soon looking at all the life we saw today. The spearfish were mixed in with the big aku and we  caught 2 nice spearfish and got the rarest billfish in the world crossed off their species list.img_3404

Butterfingers

Friday, July 10th, 2009

We fished a mini private tournament that host 16 anglers by 8 boats for a 50 pound test tournament. The event was put together by Tim Hicks on boat Illusions. The marlin bite came on for the 3 day event and the boats saw good numbers of fish. On the first day of the tournament we had a nice fish come to the short bait that was over 500 pounds. It was a good match for the 50 pound test. After a 20 minute fight we pulled the hook. We saw another smaller fish that didn’t bite and missed a spearfish. On the second day we missed 2 blues. We caught a striped marlin about 120 pounds on the third day of the tournament. Late in the afternoon we had a fish over 300 pounds jumping all over the ocean taking 300 yards of line and it came off. With 5 minutes to go we released a fish 250 pounds that was a rascal fish jumping all over on the leader. A fun fish that finished the event well for us. We sure had a bad case of butterfingers this week. The highlight of the tournament was the Illusions releasing a 800 pound plus fish on 50 after a 2 hour fight.img_3362

Japan Rotary Club Trip

Friday, July 10th, 2009

img_3352Guests of the Japan Rotary Club fished with Club member and host Kent Nakamaru on the Northern Lights. Kent my dad spent time with the Japan Rotary Club a number of times with my mom and the exchange has been rewarding for both sides seeing each other home lands and sharing the fellowship of the Rotary Club. On their last trip they caught a nice 143 pound ahi. Our day started out well with a marlin at 7:00 in the morning. It took the pressure off for the rest of the day. We missed 2 more the same size before we went in .Today was the first day we saw more than 2 blues in awhile. Looks like the fish are on the way.

Maui Boys

Friday, July 10th, 2009

img_3256Friends Mike fisher and Zadoc Brown came over from maui to fish with on the Northern Lights. Our friend Hal Westbrook of Oregon joined them as we went looking for the same dolphin pod we had yesterday. We had high hopes for another blind bite like we had yesterday. Sure enough we did and missed him again. We couldn’t believe it. Soon after we tagged a spearfish which turned our luck around.  We found  a nice tuna trolling in the dolphin pod weighing 165 pounds. The spread out pod came together after a hour and the tuna consolidated helping us get a bite on our Polu Kai Jet again. Because the pod had come tight we put our tuna stick out a caught another one right away making our day a great one. Our barbecue later was a great time and good to get caught up with old friends.
