Ed Clock and his son were here hunting with Pat Fisher of Fisher Outfitters and came out for a day with us after shooting 2 nice goats. We went off shore and looked for the dolphin pods and could find them all morning. About 11:00 we had a blind strike on a big tuna that exploded on our stinger lure a Polu Kai Rocketman Jet. It missed it leaving a giant hole as Matt and I stood there wondering how it missed the lure. We continued looking with a few other boats for the dolphins and got another bite on the long rigger on our 7 inch Polu Kai Rocketman jet. We caught this one this time and it turned out to be a 100 pound ahi. What luck 2 blind bites on tuna in the same day early season. We found a spread out pod of dolphins and worked them until they came together and caught a 165 pounder on the tuna stick. It was a great bite jumping out of the water to catch the skipping squids. We ended our day missing a marlin and catching a nice ono on the way home. It turned out to be a great combo hunt and fish for the Clocks.

Clocks Ticking
Friday, July 10th, 2009Hayashi
Friday, July 10th, 2009Jason Hayashi of hilo and his friends had an interesting day on the Northern Lights. We headed south to look for the dolphin pods of tuna and found a floater the had the same small Mahi Mahi that we found for the girls the day before. We caught 25 or 30 and while we were focused on the Mahis the dolphins that we were looking for came right to us. They looked really good but we could mark the tuna that we were hoping to see. The pod took us north towards home leaving the good floater behind. Having enough to eat we headed north looking for a marlin and got a call that our fish buyer Wesley Murakami weekend fishing hooked a monster marlin. We fished our way up to him as he was finishing a 3 and a half hour fight. The fish floated up next to the boat dead and appeared as long as he and his son Kent’s boat. We pulled the huge fish into the boat and met them at the scales where the fish weighted 827 pounds. It had an exceptional bill on it – a beautiful fish.
Girls Day
Friday, July 10th, 2009We were having breakfast on a calm Saturday morning at home and we got a call from our friends on the “Salty Dog that they had found a floater that had a bunch of Mahi Mahi on it. I called Matt and checked to see if he wanted to have a family day with us if we ran out to the floater that was near the harbor. We met at the harbor and ran out and started catching perfect sized Mahi Mahi for my daughters Juliana and Gabriella to catch. We fished for an hour and a half and had enough so we ran in and a the rest of our family day on shore.
Big Mahi Mahi
Friday, July 10th, 2009Pat Fisher of Fisher Outfitters(See Hawaiisafaris.com) Brought his family out on the Northern Lights for a family day and found a net full of nice sized Mahi Mahi. My good friend Brian Balencio a Mahi Mahi master happen to be with us to help us catch 20 big Mahi Mahi. The sharks were bad chasing the Mahis around while they were hooked up. The little tuna would get eaten off as soon as they got hooked up. The aggressive show of the big sharks chasing the big mahi mahi was awesome. Pat and Brian skill at catching Mahi Mahi helped in getting them in the boat. We only lost a few to the sharks thanks to good angling and good team work. Pat’s whole family shared in the action his wife toby catching a 52 pound bull and his daughter Emalia and Chas catching numbers 35 and 40 pounders. Chas’s friend Sammy Kealiihomalu caught a bunch on the numerous triples that we had. Good fun and good eats!

Rare May Grand Slam
Friday, July 10th, 2009Matt Bowman started off with a bang as our new mate after Tracy flew out yesterday. Bruce and Ellen Meyer of Texas found great fishing going 6 for 7 on lures today. We started off with a 80 pound blue marlin off of the back side of the grounds. We worked our way south and tagged our first spearfish outside of the harbor. Our great day was made even better by catching a triple striped Marlin near the VV buoy. They were all nice sized and put on a great show Matt’s speed paid off when the 3 stripeys ended up at the boat all at once. Once tagged we realized we had gotten a Kona slam. We set out the lures and tagged a second spearfish on the way in and made the double slam possible but the second blue didn’t show up in time.
