Young Man and the Sea

Monday, March 29th, 2010

15 year old Curtis House is feeling like Santiago did when he lost his big fish to the sharks in The Old Man and the Sea. He joined his family, his dad Garrett his mom Kim and his sister Megan. At 2:30 we had a really big bite on the long corner on our Polu Kai tube. I think the fish was looking at my big teaser I run short because the bite looked like it ate it going away. The fish jumped right away out of the giant hole that it left in the water and we knew what we were up against. The fish around 600 pounds made a fast run in shore and I turned and chased on it. The belly in the line closed up allowing us to get a bunch of line back. We filled the spool slowly until it was full again. The fish was tired after 40 – 50 jumps on the long run it made. It was so tired it was pin wheeling down deep. The reason we know that is that the line would be really tight and then get slack then when it would go away from us it would come tight again. The long corner mark came out of the water and everyone got their cameras ready. Brian got ready for the leader as the fish finished on its last circles. I eased back as it pulled and went slightly ahead as she came to us. As she came to us with less the 30 yards out we pulled the hook. Darn it! After all those jumps and recovering all that line we pulled the hook. We all couldn’t believe it but that’s fishing. Curtis asked what he did wrong and there was nothing any of us could have done she just wasn’t hooked good enough to get a tag in it. Curtis has many years of fishing left in his career so this one won the next one will be his.

Got this shot off of video of the fish we caught on Thursday. It doesn’t really do the fish justice in this shot.  For the story see the post “Girl Power”

More Mahi Action

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Anglers Steve and Sheila came out with us today. Steve was looking for action and some thing good to take back with him to eat. We went looking for the dolphins hoping for a tuna and found a floater and caught a nice bunch of Mahi Mahi. The rubbish is beginning to come in and there are starting to get mahi mIMG_0106ahi and ono finally coming in. They have not been here in numbers yet but it looks like they are starting to come in. Friends of ours found the school and caught a couple of tuna. Today the mahi mahi made our day.

Parke Lights ‘em up

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Old friend Parke Barlesheimer came to fish and hunt Kona again this year. He has fished with me for over 10 years now and we have had some good days. One of his early best days was he shot 2 nice tom turkeys one morning and Pat fisher of Fisher Outfitters called me at home to see if I could get Parke out fishing to fill in the rest of his day. We went out at about 10:00 and had 5 shots at spearfish the last one got stuck for the World record on 16 pound line. Last year Parke caught a 940 on the Marlin Magic with Marlin Parker and Jason Holtz. He is fishing with them this week for some full moon big fish action trying to get his Pacific Blue over 1000. The spring full moons are good times to try.IMG_0104 He has caught 11 grander Blacks in Australia and recently  caught a swordfish on 80 pound test that was over 500 pounds in New Zealand. He hunts and fishes the world so it is always good to hear about all of his adventures when we get together. We had some good luck on the turkeys again this year. We called a tom up and he got hung up with hens so Parke stalked his way close enough to get a shot. We got our second bird down low when he answered a call we made from the truck. He came up to us after a stalk to the call and we got him completing Parke’s turkey limit his first morning.

Girl Power

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Faune Conner and 3 girl friends came out today to fish with us on the 37 Merritt. The 40 was getting some work done on it and we took the 37 today. Geza Ciege the owner of the boat and I headed south where the current has been really good to the north. it usually good on a south current but the steady current has been good for the action down in the southern zone.  Our plan was to troll our way down to the UU buoy and live bait and troll back. We were a mile from the buoy and we had a unreal bite on the short bait. We had a lure I call Henry short and he disappeared in a hole. what a bite. the fish jumped right away and everyone knew it was a nice one. 15 year old Emily Hokett got in the chair and we hooked up our brand new Aftco harness we just got and went to battle. The fish jumped all over and once we settled the fish down I live planed the fish to the surface. After a 20 minute fight Geza took the wheel and I went down and wired the fish up. It tried to make a switch back and went back to the port side where I was able to pop the fish up. It was a nice fat healthy fish. We were able to get nice video and pictures. The fish was close to 800. Probably not much more but really solid and really held it weight well back by it tail. Not bad for Emily’s first blue marlin. If she would have been able to take the rod to the chair it would have beat the junior record by a mile. We ended up at the buoy like we planned but were forced to troll due to the porpoise taking over the buoy stealing everyone’s bait. We trolled up current a ways when a 550 or 600 pound fish came up on the Polu Kai tube on the short rigger and missed it 2 times. it went back and its bill came up all over the stinger and it took a swipe and left. I went straight for awhile with nothing so I turned around for another pass. I just got straightened out and the short bait went off. I thought alright we got ‘em and it turned out to be it partner a fish around 200. Faune made short work of the fish and we were back trolling in just over 5 minutes. Lady luck was with us today and Girl power helped catch our biggest fish of the season so far.

Cast and Blast

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Tom Baumann and Peter Hilf came over to hunt and fish with us. Here is Peter with a nice Kahala we caught jigging. We fish 2 days for kahala and they hunted Turkeys for 2 days with Pat. Peter and Tom have fished offshore a bunch and asked to fish inshore where they could get a bunch of action. we had a great couple of days with them. They brought their favorite jigs for yellow tail and caught over 30 Kahala in 2 days of fishing Pete got spooled by one fish we couldn’t stop. I usually don’t do much of that kind of fishing but it was fun. they caught a 8 pound uku that we steamed up and seared with peanut oil and vegetables that night. They both got their 2 turkeys and Pete got a nice goat. We look forward to doing it again for what they were calling “reef donkey action”IMG_5867

Kiasaki gets a nice Billy

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Robert Kiasaki author of “Rich Dad Poor Dad” a  long time client of Pat Fisher of Fisher Outfitters hunted with me on a overnight to Delico ranch. We were on a meat hunt and could pass up this nice billy. There were 5 nice ones together and this one had a twin. It had a beautiful coat so we chose this one. His brother Jon was along and got his share of action in the 2 day hunt. We had a great hunt and saw lots of really nice goats. It is dry at the ranch and more big billys are coming up from below than ever.IMG_5866

Hal Wesbrook and his daughter Teal invited Teal’s college friends out for some mahi action. We found these at the tsunami buoy. Everyone caught one so it made it fun. The idea was action so we went for some dinner. Yum Yum.

Nice Fish

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Today Brain and I took Hal Westbrook and his friend Scott out for the day. We trolled the red hill most of the morning and headed south down the 500 fathom line. Outside of Honaunau we had a nice fish come to the short bait. The fish came off after 50 feet of line. We trolled for a minute and the fish came up on the short rigger . After a 10 minute fight we caught the fish a 500 pound blue. It was nice to see a good one come in short and stay with it. The second chance got us the fish. There were a few other nice fish caught today in the fleet. There hasn’t been many fish but the quality has been here. it is trophy hunting time. We have waited for our shot and thankfully it got stuck.IMG_5845IMG_5854IMG_5857

Dave Luedde’s Sheep

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Charlie1

Dave Got this nice sheep late in the afternoon. We looked all day for one we liked and this one showed up at 3:30. It was getting foggy and it was going to sock in. We had only a few more minutes of visibility and got him before we couldn’t see anything. We could hear the sheep but couldn’t see them.
