A Victory Lap

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

The David family has has had a great trip and it was going to be their last day of fishing before Jimmy went back to run his charter boat the Land H and the kids James and Laurel would start school. As we ate dinner we agreed that it had been a great trip and whatever we could do today would be great. Their last day would be great weather we caught anything or not and we were in the great position ofnot really needing to nail ‘e to save the trip on the last day. Mat had the 37 out with another guest and the Davids and I took the 40. Jimmy would wire and the family would help do the rest. We found a nest of fish to the south that turned out to be one of the best trolling bites of the summer. We hooked a big fish right away and James had the first shot in the chair. The fish was a nice fish but didn’t get a great look at the fish. It pulled hard and James had the drag up to 40 pounds before we knew it. We got the fish close in a half and hour and it pulled so hard Jimmy began to help James hold the pressure when I would make the fish pull to wear it down. Jimmy got the leader finally and we had a satalite tag ready to tag the fish with.I had been waiting for a big fish to use the tag on to see where the big ones go. Perfect here it was right there. The fish had fought so hard it rolled on to its back and we could revive it. She had died. We sslid the fish in the door and James would be able to get a weight on his bioggest blue and the fish would get to be eaten. We set the line out and saw a fish feeding next to the boat and 20 minutes later Debi caught a 120 pounder. We worked the area and found more fish on the surface anf on the sounder. We found Debbi in the chair again and I looked down and James had his gloves on. It looked like Jimmy was going to let James wire his first blue. He had practiced the whole trip with Mat with the teaser line and the bucket. We came up with a saftey plan and as the fish came to the boat we saw that it was in control and would be perfect for James. He did a great job and all the practice paid off. I was worried about what would happen when Jimmy put the satalite tag in it but when the tag when in the fish surged forward and James leaned back and held the fish under control. It was safely released and we had the 3rd one of the day. I was a great way to finish up our victory lap.

Jumped’em off

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Had a fish come up short rigger today and bite the Polu Kai tube and jump off. We worked the area and had no other bites all day. The fishing has been good to the south up in tight. We watched a bunch of fish hooked but the fish won for the most part today.

James Get Another One

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

James got another blue today keeping his streak alive. It was a good jumper.

Tough day on the grounds

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Today we trolled up to the grounds and looked as far up as OTEC buoy trying to repeat last years trip with the David Family. The current was good on the front side but as we went back to the back side there was a rip that came from the outside and the current went slack on the other side. This made the current at the buoy bad for fishing. There was a ton of bait around but it was spread and finding the marlin with bait would have been tough. We ended up at the grounds and Laurel caught this shark.

James Gets His First Of The Trip

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

James fished a lot of days with us before his turn came and even though it was tough at times to watch the fish get caught by my clients and his family. He showed great patience waiting for his turn in the chair. looking at the smile on his face when he got his turn it looked like it was worth the wait.

Laurel Gets Her First Blue

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

After the great start yesterday Mat got the Davids out for a early morning first pass. The lures got set and within the first few minutes they had a perfect blue on for Laurel. One of their goals was to catch her first blue and it didn’t take long. With Jimmy on the leader they caught the fish in 6 minutes on a Polu Kai Tubeulation on the long rigger. They had caught the fish by 7:00 in the morning. I trolled by and got this shot of them after they took the fish. it was her first marlin and they wanted to take the fish. Friends need fish for a luau and Jimmy wanted to weigh Laurel’s first Blue marlin so they weighed the fish. It weighted 165.5. Laurel reminds us of the half a pound. They continued to fish and saw 2 more blues, one a real nice one but missed them.

Davids Off to a Good Start

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

To refresh your memory last year the David Family was here last year and caught 8 blues and 6 ahi last year this time on the best Kona fishing day in history. It was one of those days where everything went right for us and the fish kept biting until dark. With the fishing so good and our luck rolling we kept fishing and they kept biting. They had been here awhile riding along until their fishing dates started. james doing a great job for us in the HIBT las week.Mat got them out on the 37 Merritt today because I had a charter on the 40. With the fishing good the Davids booked the 37 to get a early start on the their trip. Mat fished them down south where they trolled down at Honaunau and missed a tuna on the stinger. What was strange was a spearfish came upon the same lure a minute later and Laurel (8 years old ) caught her first spearfish about 35 pounds. They worked the area the rest of the day and missed another tuna and caught a 115 pound tuna for Debbi.

Jay Does it for the 3rd Time

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Today my friend Brian balencio fished with us because Mat had the 37 Merritt out with the David Family. The ribbing from Jay started right away to see if Brian could keep the streak going. The second session of teasing came when the short bait disappeared in a hole the size of the cockpit. Jay turned around to see the hole the fish left. We caught the 400 pound fish in about 10 minutes and I started teasing him back. “That will teach you to tease us about catching one” He said “Yeah you really screwed us over” We had a good laugh on that one and ended up in early not wanting to mess with the 6 for 6 record of catches made before 11:00.

Jay Does It Again

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Jay Marvin and his father and sons came to the boat early this morning again to try to keep the streak alive. This time we would have to do it with out Mat. Mat had the David family out on the 37 Merritt today and I had KJ with me today. Would you believe we got a fish by 9:00 again! It was funny hearing Jay tease KJ as time ticked on. Kj got it done for them and again we were in to get to the pool.

Afternoon Family Day

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

We were in with Jay at 11:00 so I called my wife and my friends the David Family to go out for the afternoon. We were off to a great day so I thought let’s go back out. My family hadn’t been fishing for a long time so it was the perfect day to get them out. We went to the ground and live baited with no luck. Trolling home we got a nice bite on the stinger. Debbi David caught the fish at around 4:00. Nice afternoon with the family.
