T.A.R.T. Tournament

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

tart1

This year was the  eighteenth annual TART tournament.  Ken Corday has been hosting the tournament since its beginning.  Five boats including the Ihu Nui, Chiripa, Humdinger, Pacific Blue and the Northern Lights competed for five days to accumulate the most points for catching blue marlin.  Every fish tagged is worth points, and a fish over three hundred pounds can be boated for extra  points.  Five anglers, including Ken, also compete for points and the overall total score for the week.  Each angler fishes one day on their designated boat and switches boats throughout the week. On day one we opened up the lead by catching Ken the first blue of the tournament.  He also released a shortnose spearfish but unfortunately only blue marlin count for points.

240ahi1

Mid July had a great live bait bite only 15 minutes from the harbor. Baits were easy to catch at V V buoy and we would wander into the deep with live skipjack. We starting seeing the Ahi on the sounder and they would bite every other time. On the 16th of July Terry Fohey hooked into an Ahi of massive size.  Tracy got the leader in 5 minutes and the tuna took off for a second run. Terry put the drag up and had it to the boat in another 2 minutes. The tuna circled 6 times on the leader and gave me a great chance to get pictures of it.  We also had Dingo on the boat to gaff so I was able to shoot away. The series of circles ended with a catch in less than 10 minutes. It is the biggest tuna the boat has caught and ended up the biggest of the year for 2008. They are rare these days in this this size range and to find one right in front of the harbor in the calm summer weather was an event of a life time. For Terry it became his personal best, beating the tuna he and Hutton his daughter had caught in 2000 that was 212 and the biggest of that year.

A blue a day

Catching two nice fish in two days is a pretty big feat to accomplish.   On June 29th we tagged the first of the two blues for the wife and on the very next day we attempted to release the second fish for the husband, but unfortunately the marlin wasn’t able to survive.  After being lassoed with the leader, the large blue fought herself into exhaustion, and we were not able to revive her at the boat.  We swam her for fifteen minutes and let her go three separate times only to have her float back to the surface.  With no other choice we pulled her through the door and ran her in. Even though we release 99 percent of our marlin, we do have a few that die once in awhile.  In Hawaii all fish are eaten and a large marlin like this will not go to waste.  Our blue ended up weighing 635, not bad considering we were calling her 600 before we had to pull her aboard.

A great day in the porpoise

A great day in the porpoise. It was a busy day for my mate Jon Bennett. We changed lure back and forth 6 or 7 times before we ended up catching this 182 pound ahi on the first pass in the pod. We caught the second one on the tuna stick after fishing the pod for 2 hours or so. We caught this Mahi mahi at a floater on a ballyhoo before we came home.

Hal’s Blue

Hal Westbrook (foreground) moments before releasing his first ever blue marlin.  We had ran thirty miles to Tsunami buoy that day with nothing to show for it but luck happened to be on Hal’s side. While high speed trolling home from the buoy at a brisk fourteen knots this large blue crashed our short Polukai jet.  After a quick battle we released her to fight another day.

Good Day

Some days were just meant to be special.  After releasing a striped marlin in the morning for a first time young female angler we hooked into a large yellow fin for the dad.  As if that wasn’t enough we managed to catch thirty eight Mahis at a floater.  Not a bad day for a father daughter team.

Four Ahi for the kids

Great day for the kids.  Catching four ahi trolling  is something that doesn’t happen very often in Kona.  We found what we call the outside porpoise school and well, let the kids do all the work.
