1 for 6 What?

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Today we took out the 37 and ran a bit to get to a bite down south. The bite was a Milolii and we want to get fishing time there. An old friend Jeff Hara and his friends came out with us. We had our first bite at the TT buoy that bit the long corner and took a bunch of line deep. The fish came up jumping and got bigger as it jumped. It grey hounded towards the boats fishing the buoy for tuna. Here you see the marlin jumping towards my friend Brice. He looks on as the fish gets closer. After a bunch of jumps it came off. We trolled up the 3 mile line and had 5 more bites on the way home. The second of the 6 bites was the best of all. The 600 pound plus fish raced all over behind the stinger. it puled on from the left to the right and we missed her. I turned around to try it again and here it came again and plied on. It jumped out of the water and turned out to be it partner a 200 pounder. We caught this one and got going again. We had 2 more fish around 350 big bite and come off. Frustrating but great to get the bites. Other boats caught nice fish so it is good to be out.

Mat Has Another Great Day

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Mat had another great day today. They caught a nice spearfish and released it and caught a blue Marlin in the dolphins. The tuna were in the dolphins but the small pod was too crowed to fish so they kept trolling. Nice to have both boats out.

Great days with Rocky

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Had a great couple days with Rocky. We missed a few nice fish the last one coming to the short bait which was around 350 or 400 pounds. It dropped back and bit the short rigger and jumped off. Rocky and Heidi flew out a couple hours after coming in. We owe Rocky one and look forward to the next trip.

We Got The Best Out of That One

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Rocky and Heidi came to Hawaii for their honeymoon. They came from Trinidad where Rocky fishes on a 47 Cabo called the “Ringleader”. We fished South today and had a good day. We missed a nice fish first thing on the black Polu Kai tube jumping him off right away. We went all day mid day with no bites. Late in the day on the tide change we raised a fish on the blue tube on the short rigger. The fish acted funny and didn’t really want to grab the lure but stayed there for ever. While the fish was on that lure the long rigger came down and didn’t get stuck. Mat worked on the one on the short rigger and the short bait went off. That one got stuck. We messed with the one on the short rigger for a minute while hooked up and gave up and went to go catch the one we had on. Right at the boat we got a great show. I got these shots right before we pulled the hook at leader. As we say on those “we got the best out of that one”

The Great Marlin Race

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

The Great Marlin Race is on again this year. It is a race of Marlin tagged by sat tags. The marlin the travels the farthest wins. Sponsors of the tags are the contestants and it is a fun way to see the science of where the Marlin go. We put the tag in this Marlin so we will keep you informed on what happens to his fish.

2 for 2

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Today we went 2 for 2 on a half day. We wanted to stay out but had to go in. The fish jumped a lot right at the boat.

Overnight with Bruce Alden

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

The fishing has been good to the sotuh so we planned a overnight trip. When the fishing is good at Milolii it is so nice to stay on the action for more time in the bite zone. We provisioned up for the 2 day trip and headed south. Mat and Bruce rigged up the lures of the day from all the lures Bruce brought when a 350 blue blew up the long corner. It went off jumping and we pulled the hook. We got going again and they put out a Bomboy Scarface on the long rigger. It was running so good it had to get bit. A fish about 140 came up on it 5 minutes after they set it out and we tagged the fish in about 5 minutes. We fished the TT buoy for a few hours and had a few tuna bites and missed them. Here you see my friend Brian who you have seen wiring fish with us with a tuna he caught. The bite for marlin was slow there so we trolled all afternoon with no bites. We set up for our drift for the night and caught a bunch of squid after dinner. We slept off of the flows to get a early morning shot at the buoy.

Bruce Is Back!

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Bruce Alden came back to Kona for his second trip of the season. He fished with a couple of my friends because we were booked. We had a great trip with him last year and hoped to do it again. Bruce had a bunch of lures over before he left to come over. They were an amazing collection of lures by all of the best lure makers in Hawaii. He an Mat piked out a first team and they started to put the lures out. They changed lures about every half and hour and they found that most of them ran really well. We caught a fish in the morning on a jet that was made by Gary Ehoff and was a squid colored lure. It was a light jet that ran great. The fish came up on the polu Kai blue tubulation then went over and ate the jet. Nice to get a fish right off the bat. Good shots of Keauhou in the background of the jump shots we got.

O for 3 on Spears

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Today Daryl and his family came out with us. News of James’s fish got to them and they wanted to see if they could get one like his. We trolled all over looking for the body of fish that we had been fishing. We looked more North of the area we had a couple of days ago and found the spears and no blues today. The current remains good so we will see what happens tomorrow.

A Day Down Under

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

Today the Mathesens From Australia fished with us. we found that they had caught a nice fish here last year on another boat and they were looking forward to getting another one this year. We trolled down south on the 500 fathom line and when we reached Hookena we had a nice fish come up on the stinger. It pushed a ton of water trying to get the little lure down the hatch. Finally it got it and started to go crazy jumping all over. In all of the splashing it got the hook out. We couldn’t believe it! We worked the area for a long time with no other bites
