The Bernier Family fished with us today. We were looking for smaller game for the boys to catch and found the perfect day for them. We caught these Mahis at a floater catching our share before we had to go in. Trolling home we had a monster come up on the long corner. It came up on the Polu Kai tube and stayed on it for a long time. It missed and missed it before it finally gave up. It didn’t touch the lure once the entire time. It would open its mouth and come up right behind it and totally miss it. The last time she came for it I slowed down and she slowed down with us and sunk out. Good to see such a beautiful fish this time of year. The bill on it was the size of our rod grip. Almost had the ultimate family day. Food fish for fun and the big one for dad on the way back.

The Bernier Boys Catch ‘em up
Monday, January 10th, 2011Whale Shark
Monday, January 10th, 2011the bottom fishing was good yesterday so we decided to go again. We had just got started and this whale shark showed up to check us out. We had Jack and Kai Bunnell with us today and Dr. Jack jumped in with a mask to check him out. His son Kai and my dad Kent watched as they circled behind the boat. Great way to start the day. We did good on a half day of bottom fishing after the rare sighting.

Bottomfishing for New Years Fish
Monday, January 10th, 2011Today my dad Kent and my brother-in-law Doug Hopeman went bottom fishing with me in order to catch fish for the New Years holiday. It is tradition for us to eat the fish that we catch bottom fishing for the holiday. It has been slow so we didn’t expect much. It started off slow but picked up and soon it turned into a great day. It surpassed my expectations by far. This fish is an Opakapaka and weighed 10 pounds. It is rare for us to see them this size now.
37 Finishes Dry Dockback
Monday, January 10th, 2011We finished a 2 week dry dock today. We pulled the boat to clear coat the toe rail and the varnished areas downstairs. Lots of parts and lots of sanding. We have been clear coating the varnished areas so we can get more coats on with less sanding. it is still a ton of sanding but we get more material on in less time. The key for us is to keep the wood in good shape so we limit the amount of breakouts after the clear goes on. Fishing as hard as we do it is hard on the varnished areas but the clear coats seem to help keep it nice longer.Good to be back in the water but I am going to do a bunch in the water in between fishing.

Good Action
Monday, January 10th, 2011Today we had a great trip with the Staples. They came from Destin Florida to visit the Big Island and fish with us on the Northern Lights. They operate a charter business in Destin so they were no strangers to catching fish. They brought their luck and skill to us here in Kona filling up the box with a mixed catch of fish. We had a really nice day with them and the beautiful weather sure made it even better.
