Close One

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

Today we started off with this big Kahala then headed off shore to troll. We had a fish come up short and Mat switched the fish to a live bait. The fish took the bait and took off. The line went up the starboard side as line pealed off the reel. I headed towards the line to start to turn and chase on the fish when Mat said, “Look out its right there!” I looked to the starboard where the line was and the fish slammed in to us on the port in 30 seconds time. I looked over the port side and the fish floated dead down the side of the boat. We wound the line in while slack as the belly came to us. We watched as the line came clean and tight to the fish. In 2 minutes total fighting time Mat and I pulled the fish through the door stone dead. It was a shame it died. There was no damage to the boat. It was a surprise to us from the sound it made when it hit the boat. We are lucky no one got hurt. We worked the area and caught this 110 ahi to cap off a great day. The Marlin weighed 338 and was donated to an up coming luau.

Dad Gets a Birthday Fish

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

My dad fished with us his birthday and caught this nice stripy. We bait a switched this one and it got all tangled up after we hooked the fish. It was the second fish of a double. We had a stripy on the long rigger and we pitched the bait trying to poach it off of the lure and a second fish ate the bait. We got a bunch of line out before we could hook the first one that came up. The stripey we had on went crazy jumping because the leader was tangled on its tail. Once it went down we had to plane it up. Once it was up we got it untangled and on its way. Happy Birthday Dad !

Hospital Foundation Auction Win

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

The Roth’s won the charter we donated to the Kona Hospital Foundation Auction and we were able to get the out for a full day. They were joined by their friends the Higgins who are active in help raise funds for the Hospital. We found a nice Stripey on the back side of the grounds which came to the teaser and dropped back to a small lure we had on the short rigger. We really appreciate the generous donation to the Kona Hospital. Further donations would be much appreciated. We never know when we will need our community hospital.

Ken Killian Gets a Stripey on the Fly

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

Ken Killian of Alaska caught this nice Striped Marlin in the fly with us on the Northern Lights. We got hooked up on the second Stripey that came to the pattern. We teased him to the corner and got the fish to switch. After a 15 minute fight we got the fish by the bill and lifted him out for a picture. We had 7 or 8 up that day making it a perfect day for the fly. We had a bunch almost switch but every time they got close we didn’t get them hooked. They were all perfect size for the fly and teased well. For once the right fish for the right mission were here today. It was fun to have it work out for Ken.

Father Daughter Team Gets ‘em

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

Father Daughter team Dayton And Monya came to hunt and fish on the Big Island with us. We started our 2 days together fishing a half day on the Northern Lights. We looked at the grounds and it looked good and we marked fish but didn’t get any bites. We worked our way back south where we got a bite on the stinger. Monya’s 18th birthday present was to come to Hawaii with her dad and catch a marlin and do some hunting. Now we had half of her birthday present on the line now all we had to do is get a tag in it. After a good fight we got a tag in her fish, a blue about 70 pounds. Not long later we needed to head back. With her marlin caught we headed to hunt boars at our boar lease. We met up with our head boar guide Neil Cabral and nephew Andrew and we headed out. We had beautiful weather and the pigs were out. Right away we had the dogs get on a nice boar but it got away, Monya gave me her video camera on her phone and I thought I filmed the entire exchange. It looked awesome I told her and after further review I didn’t have the start button pushed right on her iphone. We kept hunting checking all of Neil’s spots until the pigs came out in the open where we could spot and stalk. About 3:30 Monya connected with this nice boar and our hunt was complete. It was great to see Dayton again and good to see he and his daughter

Double Trouble

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

Here you see a crazy double blue we caught recently. It was hard to make sense of for a minute but in the end we tagged two little blues. After a long day of trolling 2:30 brought us the day saver.
