Tim doubles up

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Today we set for a sheep and if things go well maybe a goat. Things went well in the morning. We saw a nice herd down low and got on a nice ram. Tim made a nice shot and we got this nice ram. It was 9:00 so we headed south and got this nice Billy. Tim is a good shot so we were able to make our chances count with a nice double day.

2011 Billfish Expo

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

I was asked to speak on blue marlin fishing by Organizer Skip Smith again this year.It was held at the IGFA this year. There was a good turn out again this year and it was really good to see old friends fellow captains and charters again. Being so far from Florida it is hard to see everyone so it has been good to be involved with the Expo to reconnect with everyone that live in Florida. I must say I was humbled being on the stage with Barkey Garnsey and Mike Lemmon 2 of my heroes to speak about blue marlin fishing. Mike was knowledgable as usual and Barkey funny as ever. Skip really did a good job with leading in the captains to the subject matter with questions which helped us keep moving forward. To see all of the other speakers and sponsors was amazing. For more info on the Expo and who spoke I have put a link to it here. If you are in the area next year it would be a great event to look for coming up before the Miami Boat Show.

The Bernier Boys Catch ‘em up

Monday, January 10th, 2011

The Bernier Family fished with us today. We were looking for smaller game for the boys to catch and found the perfect day for them. We caught these Mahis at a floater catching our share before we had to go in. Trolling home we had a monster come up on the long corner. It came up on the Polu Kai tube and stayed on it for a long time. It missed and missed it before it finally gave up. It didn’t touch the lure once the entire time. It would open its mouth and come up right behind it and totally miss it. The last time she came for it I slowed down and she slowed down with us and sunk out. Good to see such a beautiful fish this time of year. The bill on it was the size of our rod grip. Almost had the ultimate family day. Food fish for fun and the big one for dad on the way back.

Whale Shark

Monday, January 10th, 2011

the bottom fishing was good yesterday so we decided to go again. We had just got started and this whale shark showed up to check us out. We had Jack and Kai Bunnell with us today and Dr. Jack jumped in with a mask to check him out. His son Kai and my dad Kent watched as they circled behind the boat. Great way to start the day. We did good on a half day of bottom fishing after the rare sighting.

Bottomfishing for New Years Fish

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Today my dad Kent and my brother-in-law Doug Hopeman went bottom fishing with me in order to catch fish for the New Years holiday. It is tradition for us to eat the fish that we catch bottom fishing for the holiday. It has been slow so we didn’t expect much. It started off slow but picked up and soon it turned into a great day. It surpassed my expectations by far. This fish is an Opakapaka and weighed 10 pounds. It is rare for us to see them this size now.

Jeff Gets 3 Achery Sheep

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Jeff Lee came to hunt archery with us. We had a hard first day not seeing enough sheep to get on a nice ram. His second day we had an idea where to look for them and found a good herd. We hunt the same bunch over 4 miles or so. It was a long way back to the truck but it was good to be on sheep all day. We took 2 nice rams and a management ram. we had great stalks all day. Jeff is an amazing shot.

37 Finishes Dry Dockback

Monday, January 10th, 2011

We finished a 2 week dry dock today. We pulled the boat to clear coat the toe rail and the varnished areas downstairs. Lots of parts and lots of sanding. We have been clear coating the varnished areas so we can get more coats on with less sanding. it is still a ton of sanding but we get more material on in less time. The key for us is to keep the wood in good shape so we limit the amount of breakouts after the clear goes on. Fishing as hard as we do it is hard on the varnished areas but the clear coats seem to help keep it nice longer.Good to be back in the water but I am going to do a bunch in the water in between fishing.
