It was a great opportunity for Mat Bowman and I to be included in the trip that Rob Hytner of New York and Jeff Kahl of the Piper out of Maalaea Maui put together with Tuna Adventures. Rob and Jeff fish together on the Piper and set up the trip to fish together this fall in Nova Scotia. When Jeff gave me the call to come along help out on the boat and take pictures and video I jumped at the chance. Mat Bowman my co captain drove 10 hours from Maine where he shrink wraps boats and met Jeff and I at the Halifax Air port. Our hosts Capt AJ and Ron from Pelagic set us up with a nice cottage to stay and Mat was our wheels while we were there.

Cheney came over from Florida to visit Kauai and set up a last minute Sheep hunt. We had a half day to try due to the the flight schedule from Kauai to the Big Island. I thought we would have a good chance to get on the sheep in the afternoon but when I saw he brought his bow I hoped we would have enough time. We found a few good herds and worked hard on them. The 3rd herd let us get close Cheney made a perfect shot from 29 yards. I watched from 65 yards and it was a beautiful stock and shot. Turns out we did have enough time

We had the pleasure of fishing with the top notch fishing team from New Zealand.  The team fishes ultra light tackle for fish far about the ratio of the line. They had broken over 20 billfish records most of them in the last few years. Capt. John Batterton has been an old friend for years having fished many of the same hot spots all over the world. John’s anglers Guy and Erin stopped here on their way to fishing for the Blue fin tuna in Nova Scotia. They fished 2 days with us and we raised 2 fish. One we pitched the 2 pound test to and the fish fumbled the bait. The fish was about 120 pounds. Right when we were ready to get to work the fish dropped the bait. We worked the area and raised another fish around 300 pounds and we pitched the 8 pound test and it didn’t switch. I had a nice time with John catching up on the incredible catches they have been making.

Mat Bowman finished out the 2011 summer with a bang. The great tuna day with had with Geza capped off a great summer. Mat heads to the East Coast for the fall to run Maine Mobile Shrink Wrap with his partner Ben. They have a business that specializes in shrink wrapping boats and water towers and construction sites that need to be covered for the winter. He will be back in January after they are done with work and the holidays. Mat has been the do it all guy this summer. He has been my right hand with everything we are doing now. Had a great season as my mate but also did great as a captain of the 37 Merritt and been a great apprentice guide on our hunts. I am grateful to have had him back this season and look forward to seeing him in January when we get rolling again. Good duck hunting and fly fishing to you this fall- See you back soon Thanks again- Mat

Geza Gets the Tuna Again

Geza got the tuna on great timing on 2 great days. The fish have been in the dolphins and we were able to get on them pretty good. We had good action on the tuna stick and some luck live baiting for them. The fall can be hard fishing due to the small food fish the tuna find to eat. There are silver dollar looking bait and tiny squids that they eat. They sometimes drive us crazy because they won’t bite. The 2 days we spend fishing the dolphins were great. They saw what we had and they bit. 2 fun days and good to get Geza out finally after a busy summer of charters.

TART Day 5

We were excited going into the last day in second with the chance of possibly winning. If we weighted another fish 403 or better we could win. If we stayed fish for fish with the Ihu Nui we would get second. As the day unfolded the current shifted from good enough north to north and in. The fishing changed for the worse. The bait we were seeing move off shore which I thought would be good for trolling. The fish move off shore sometimes and we hoped to get on them. The bite shut down. We had Brent on board and hoped that we could help him up the leader board and hang on to second. Second went to third at 10:00 when the Ihu Nui went ahead of us again by one point. We all fished hard all day and none of the 5 boats got bit. The Ihu Nui tagged a fish at 3:00 for their second of the day and locking second for the tournament. The Humdinger ended up winning by 200 points. Jeff’s 5th TART win.
